Upgrade insulation, ventilation when replacing your roof

If you’ll be talking to contractors about a roof replacement, there are a lot of things to consider. In addition to issues like the difference between traditional and dimensional shingles, you should also think about ways to improve your home’s insulation and ventilation. Environmental Health Watch lists roof replacement as one of the “opportunity points” for energy efficiency upgrades, since this is a time when you can access the area beneath the roof deck. According to EHW, “With the right details, there may be great benefit to creating a fully conditioned, thermally broken, vented or non-vented attic, with rigid foam board installed below the shingles.”

To prepare you to talk with roofers, HRRC has included a free workshop on “Getting Your Roof Done Right” at our upcoming Home Remodeling Fair on Saturday, April 5th. Chris Kamis from Absolute Roofing will suggest things you should discuss with your contractor. Another way to make sure you cover these issues is to use HRRC’s suggested specifications sheet on shingled roofs. Not only will the form help you compare estimates “apple to apples,” but it can also serve as a tool for you to use when discussing the job with your roofer.

A new roof is a major project, so you’ll want to make sure you are getting the best job possible. Take the time you need to get the maximum benefit from your investment.
